7 Signs a Tree in Your Richmond-Area Yard Needs to Come Down

Dead branches, leaning trunks and fungus at the base can all be warning signs. Here's what Central Virginia homeowners should look for.

1. Large dead branches

Dead limbs, especially over roofs or driveways, can fall without warning. If a big share of the canopy is dead, it may be time to remove the tree.

2. A new or worsening lean

Some trees always grow at an angle. A lean that suddenly appears or gets worse, especially with cracked or lifted soil at the base, needs attention right away.

3. Fungus or mushrooms at the base

Mushrooms growing on the trunk or roots can mean decay inside the tree, where you can't see it.

4. Cracks and splits in the trunk

Deep vertical cracks or trunks splitting into a V shape can fail during storms.

5. Hollow spots and cavities

A hollow trunk can still look healthy on the outside. Tapping it and checking the cavities helps us judge whether it's still sound.

6. Roots damaged by construction

New driveways, additions or trenching can cut major roots. Trees may start to decline a few years later.

7. Too close for comfort

A tree can be healthy but still be the wrong tree in the wrong spot, rubbing your roof or pushing on your foundation.
