When Is the Best Time to Trim Trees in Central Virginia?
Late winter is often ideal for pruning, but dead or hazardous limbs should come off any time of year.
Late winter dormancy
For most shade trees, late winter is a great time to prune. Without leaves, it's easy to see the tree's structure, and cuts heal quickly once spring growth starts.
After spring flowering
Spring-blooming trees like dogwoods and redbuds are usually best pruned right after they flower, so you don't cut off next year's blooms.
Hazards can't wait
Dead, broken or hanging limbs should be removed as soon as you notice them, whatever the season.
Before storm season
Thinning heavy canopies and removing weak limbs before summer storms and hurricane season can cut down on storm damage.
